The National Anthem Project:
Restoring America's Voice... through Music Education!

September 18, 2006
September 14th marked the 192nd anniversary of the National Anthem. The students of USD 504 celebrated this special day by meeting around the flagpole and singing "The Star-Spangled Banner." A moment of silence was offered for those who had lost their lives defending our country and to remember the fallen of 9-11.
The celebration comes on the heels of a recent Harris Poll that shows two out of three Americans DO NOT know the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner." Many are even unaware of the name of our National Anthem or the historical events that inspired the penning of the song.
School music programs play an important role in upholding our nation's heritage. Music education helps students acquire skills in knowledge and performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and other patriotic songs, as well as an understanding of our nation's history and culture. Our nation's future is enhanced by the quality of the patriotic knowledge and awareness, provided to children of all ages today, through a high quality music education program which represents a worthy commitment to our children and our nation's future.
MENC (The National Association for Music Education) launched the National Anthem Project to raise awareness about the importance of supporting and funding school music programs. They believe every child deserves a complete education that includes music and all the benefits it brings to their lives. This exciting campaign is supported by some of the country's leading organizations and individuals. Mrs. Laura Bush serves as Honorary Chairperson, music legends; the Oak Ridge Boys are Official Musical Ambassadors, and the Jeep brand is their national presenting sponsor.
Students at Neosho Heights Elementary, Service Valley, and Oswego Middle School are participating in a YEAR long, SCHOOL WIDE challenge to restore America's voice through the learning of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Every student, teacher, and staff member in each building has been challenged to learn all the words to our country's anthem before the school year is over. When this has been accomplished, each student will receive his or her name on a "STAR" that will be posted on "The Star-Spangled Banner" board for all to see!
Please join us in our effort to restore America's voice NOW!
