On Friday, December 8, Luís and Katie Almonacid (that's all-moan-A-seed for you gringos), missionaries from Chile, visited Oswego High School and gave a presentation to Mrs. Kristin Redburn's Spanish and study hall classes. Luís spoke about everyday life in Chile and the cultural differences that exist between the South American nation and the United States.
Katie showed photographs of various Chilean dishes and offered her opinion of several based upon her American palette. The students enjoyed her comparisons (Katie holds that American meat is tastier) and asked many interesting questions about Chile's seafood-rich diet. Many also asked about everyday dress and were somewhat surprised to find that most teenagers from Chile dress as they do.The couple helped the students practice their Spanish skills with various introduction and word association activities. While Katie is a native of Kansas (she grew up in the Mound Valley area), Luís is a Chilean national. Both are fluent in both English and Spanish.
