On May 5, 2008, Kristin Redburn's two beginning level Spanish classes presented their very own obras de arte (works of art), parade floats to celebrate the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.
Students learned that, contrary to popular American belief, Cinco de Mayo is not the Mexican independence day. Rather, it celebrates the defeat of the mighty French army by a rag-tag band of Mexican rebels at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.Mrs. Redburn asked her students to use their floats to represent something from the Mexico's cultural heritage.
Many students chose to incorporate the Mexican national flag, mariachi bands, or maracas, with great results. While there were many magnificent creations, only three teams could win. The honor of first place went to MaLeah and Kali, while Damon and Lane took second, and Jessy and Zack, third.
