More Than We Bargained For

....and if you want one contact me immediately. Sale Price: A buck-fifty

by Ray Huff

January 14, 2009

Surprises come in all shapes and sizes… usually they are an enjoyable experience. This situation, however, depends on how you look at it.

In mid-August we had completed the chicken coop for our school. An outstanding volunteer and individual (who shall remain nameless throughout this article for obvious reasons) decided to donate some rabbits to this school. I was hesitant at first due mainly to the fact that I had raised rabbits as a child and knew that they could multiply rather quickly. I will have to give credit to this nameless man for his persistence in assuring me that these two rabbits were indeed of the same gender. Thus, according to him, rendering them unable to reproduce.

Now let’s fast forward to last Wednesday, January 7, 2009. Mrs. Johnson and the 8th grade class were tending to their morning chores which included caring for the rabbits and chickens. One of the students spotted something that looked like a baby white rat lying dead on the chicken coop floor. Upon close inspection of the dead rodent the students soon realized what they were actually looking at…. a baby rabbit!! As you can imagine, shortly after the discovery a small search party formed. The class looked frantically for the nest hoping to find more. Luckily, a student lifted up a small ramp that lead up to the nesting boxes. There, nestled in the hay, underneath several layers of rabbit hair where 8 fat baby bunnies.

Now this leads me to one of two conclusions:

#1 – Service Valley has mutated rabbits

-or-

#2 – One of our rabbits is not a male

All jokes aside… this is a great learning experience for our students. To be able to witness a fragile newborn animal is something most students would never experience. This is why our program is so unique…our students are learning first hand about the joys of life and sometimes the harsh reality of death

IMPORTANT: If anyone would like a baby rabbit please don’t hesitate to contact me immediately. I don’t want to keep these rabbits. Be advised… they are carriers of that mutated gene: )
