First Time For Everything

by Theresa Farris

May 11, 2009

K/1 students worked together in reading groups to assemble a kite so they could then get to the fun part of the lesson ….. enjoying the day and watching their kites soar. It was a perfectly beautiful sunny day with winds around 8-12 miles per hour. We were hoping 8-12 miles per hour wind would be enough and hopefully not too much wind to check out whether we had followed the directions correctly.  It was around 9:50 when we went out the back of the school holding our kites and excited about what would happen next. Quinten and Kainen were the first pair to see success.

Quinten was holding the string and Kainen the kite with just a few feet of slack on the string. Before they knew it their kite was flying!   It didn’t take long for the rest of the partners to get their kites up in the air.  We had read the directions and it explained how we might have to run to get the kite up in the air, but there was no running involved.   All we had to do was let the kite go and the wind did the rest.
It was the first time flying a kite for several of the students. It took cooperation between partners to problem solve when and how hard to pull the string and the correct direction to help keep their kites in the air. All students were pros at flying their kites before the hour was over.
