Decisions, Decisions, What Should We Plant?

by Theresa Farris

May 11, 2009

SVCA K/1 students were having a difficult time trying to decide what to plant in their garden. There were so many choices: lettuce, carrots, cotton,
or flowers ….so many plants to choose from.
Then we read the book “Sunflower House” by Eve Bunting and the decision was easy. The book is about planting sunflowers in a circle to make a sunflower house.
Each student brought in a package of mammoth sunflower seeds. We split our plot in half and instead of making one sunflower house we are making two.
We read the instructions on the sunflower seed package, did the measuring, and planted the seeds. Now we are watching and recording the growth of our sunflowers.

The pumpkin plants grew so quickly and it was time to transplant them into the garden.

Four pumpkin plants in the middle of each side of the garden. If you look closely you can see the sunflowers starting to appear around the edge of the garden.

We also transplanted eight of our pumpkin plants into the center of the garden plots. K/1 students harvested the seeds back in October when we did our unit study on Pumpkins.
The weather is giving plenty of rain to help our seeds grow, but now we are in need of SUN. Our pumpkin plants took quite a hit when the heavy wind and rain came through. We have been out pruning the pumpkin plants in hopes of helping to give the plants time to recuperate from the storm damage.
The students won’t get to finalize their sunflower house until August after summer break. But, it will be well worth the wait!
Check back throughout the summer months for updated pictures of the sunflowers growth.
