Neither Rain, Nor sleet, Nor Dark of Day.....

by Theresa Farris

October 13, 2009

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of day will stop the K/1 students from delivering the necessary care for the SVCA’s new chicks.
K/1 students started daily chores last week. Twice a day K/1 students take fresh water and feed out to our 27 new chicks in the chicken coop.
SVCA received the 27 new chicks on Sept. 18th.
The chicks were covered with tiny, soft, fluffy feathers, called down.
The chicks were kept in a metal tub for the first 2 weeks inside the school at SVCA. The chicks had to stay under a heat lamp to ensure they stayed warm.
The chicks are now in what we lovingly call ‘the ugly stage’.

The chicks have the beginning of feathers. They have tripled in size and are running around the chicken coop. Several of them have started taking small flights.
We started caring for the chickens shortly after what felt like 40 days and nights of rain, which, of course created lots and lots of puddles. I do believe the most exciting part of doing our chores for the last couple of day is going to and coming back from the chicken coop. What else do you do when you have on rubber boots? Why of course! You step in every puddle along the way.
