SVCA Would Like To Welcome Frost!!
By Jana Johnson
September 02, 2010
As a Certified Assistance Dog, Frost is specially trained to help people. Her main job at SVCA is to help children improve their reading skills while providing unconditional love and acceptance. Research has proven that having an animal present in the classroom provides a nurturing environment conducive to learning while building a trusting relationship.
At eight weeks old Frost passed a temperament test to insure she would work well with people before being placed with a foster puppy family. There she was taught good manners and social skills.
Next, she was sent to a correctional facility where inmates in a special program taught her how to listen, obey rules and special commands to insure that Frost will assist people properly.
Frost finished her Assistance Dog training with the staff of CARES, Inc. where she and her handlers, Jana Johnson and her daughter Bricynn, a sophomore at OHS, completed their certification.
Mrs. Johnson and Bricynn are very excited about sharing Frost with the students at SVCA as well as the community. Frost will be attending different events within the district in addition to her daily work at SVCA.
The Certificated Assistance Team is covered by KSA 39-1101 through 39-11-13
