School ..... Is Hard Work!

August 23, 2009

K/1 took to our sunflower garden to prepare it for fall planting! Before the new plants could go in the ground the old plants had to come out and that …. is where the work came in!
We harvested the sunflowers by using a saw to take off the head of the sunflowers. We are going to remove the seeds to put in a bird feeder for the winter months.

K/1 students had to work together to come up with enough “kid power” to move the tallest of the sunflower plants to the compost pile.
The sunflowers were planted in the spring in hopes of making a sunflower house after reading the story “The Sunflower House” by Eve Bunting. The sunflowers bloomed during the summer months and the students did not get the opportunity to pull the sunflowers together to make the sunflower house.
On the first day of school the K/1 students planted new sunflower seeds in the greenhouse.

We will transplant the new seedlings to our garden in a couple of weeks. We are hoping the sunflowers will have a chance to bloom before the first freeze and finally have the chance to pull the sunflowers together to make the sunflower house.
