Hard at work making our snow caterpillar!

If You Build It, They Will Come!

by Theresa Farris

January 13, 2010

I have been teaching for 20 years and in that time we have never had the learning opportunity that was presented to us by the weather last week.

Monday afternoon K/1 students had perfect weather for being outside to work on their snow project.  After the frigid temperatures last week, 32 degrees felt like a nice spring day!

The warmer temperatures helped to make the snow perfect for us to create our masterpiece. The theme for our activity became,  “if we build it, they will come”.

Students started to work on making their own snowballs.  They soon found that as the snowballs grew in size, they had to work together as partners  to move it into position.

As a class, we had already decided to make a snow snake.  But after we started to work we decided (with a little input from Mr. Tyan) a caterpillar would be a more friendly and politically correct snow sculpture to catch the attention of our target group.

After we connected the snowballs, we started to work, filling in the space between the snowballs.  Our project was complete within an hour and we were ready to add the final touches.  We had to add the irresistible ingredient to draw in our feathered friends.

The birds seemed to like the tail of the caterpillar better than the head!
We built it and they did come.

We concluded our activity with hot chocolate and marshmallows.  We watched and waited and  within a short time we confirmed “if you build it, they WILL come!

The proof is in the pictures!
