Spelling Bee

By Allison, Janie

On February 5, 2013, three students from USD 504 traveled to Parsons Middle School for the Labette County Spelling Bee.  All three students were the spelling champions from their schools.  Alyssa Gharmalkar, 5th grade, represented Neosho Heights Elementary.  Rachel Schenker, 7th grade, represented Oswego Middle School.  Andy Gomez, 7th grade, represented Service Valley Charter Academy.

The drive from Oswego to Parsons was filled with nervous laughter, some talking, and lots of contemplation about the afternoon. As the spelling bee progressed, our students continued to spell correctly and stay in the bee.  One by one, as students were eliminated, it came down to Rachel Schenker and a young man from Parsons.  Rachel went through 7 rounds until finally being tripped up on the word ‘acquired’.  The other student spelled his words correctly and was declared the winner of the Labette County Spelling Bee, with Rachel winning second place.

We are very proud of all three of our representatives. All are young enough that they will have the opportunity to win their school spelling bees again next year and get the chance to compete again in the Labette County Spelling Bee.
