Journey Stories Field Trip

OMS 8th Grade

by Trevor Addis

December 24, 2009

The Oswego Middle school was fortunate enough to attend a traveling museum exhibit at the public library in Parsons, KS. The traveling exhibit is provided by the Smithsonian Museums and is free to the public. Also, there was a section within the library that focused on Parsons area history such as the Katy Railroad and the trolley service that used to connect many different parts of Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma. The exhibit allowed the 8th graders to get out of the classroom setting and see actual historical artifacts to help them gain a better understanding of United States history and our local Southeast Kansas history. During the museum experience the students were asked to participate in a scavenger hunt to find many different facts throughout the exhibits. Those students who completed the scavenger hunt with at least 22 out of 30 questions correct were entered in a drawing for a prize, which will be announced after the first of the year. The students had a fun learning experience and at the same time gained valuable historical knowledge that they can take with them throughout their educational careers.
